Hanoi has its fair share of fully vegan establishments so it can be hard to prioritise which to eat at. I’m going to make my case for Kiez Vegan, a vegan junk food restaurant in Tây Hồ.
All of the food and drinks at Kiez Vegan are delicious, plus their vegan phở is undoubtedly one of the best I’ve ever had. The food is so good that I have found myself eating there pretty much every other day. I have pretty much become part of the furniture.
The food
There isn’t one single dish that I didn’t enjoy at Kiez Vegan. From the burgers to the sauces served alongside the chips. Their vegan food is on another level! In fact, I’d go as far as to say that they make some of the best vegan junk food that I’ve eaten in Asia.
In my opinion, good vegan mayo is hard to come by in Asia, and they have absolutely mastered it. And it really makes the difference.
They use a variety of fake meats and mushrooms to create their burgers, hot dogs and other deep fried goodies. Their ‘chicken’ nuggets are made out of my all-time favourite ingredients, lion’s mane mushroom. If you haven’t tried it before, then you definitely need to order this! It is a really meaty and delicious mushroom.
If you need a break from junk food, then you must try their vegan phở. It is what dreams are made of. They serve it in typical Hanoi fashion, with a few herbs already mixed in, no hoisin sauce and the option of a few quẩy (a deep fried snack for dipping) on the side. The broth is delicious and their chilli sauce has a great kick to it. They currently serve it on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I hope they start to sell it every day, because then I’d live there.
- Price: Mains cost between 35,000 – 120,000vnd per person
The drinks
Kiez Vegan offer a few really delicious shakes and smoothies to slurp on during your meal. In typical junk food style, they are made with plenty of cream and sugar.
If you like fruity drinks then you must try their Mango Yoghurt Smoothie. If chocolate is more your thing then give their Mocha Oreo Shake a go, it comes topped with a delicious vegan whipped cream. You can start that diet tomorrow.
They also sell a range of affordable coffees, like espresso and americano, plus a few soft drinks.
- Price: All drinks cost between 20,000 – 55,000vnd each
The service
The service at Kiez Vegan is great. You order at the till where there is always at least one member of staff ready to help. They all speak a sufficient level of English, if you haven’t been able to get a grasp on the Vietnamese language, yet.
The food always comes out pretty quickly, no matter what time you visit. You may get your food delivered to you by one of the kitchen staff, and they are always super friendly and happy.
The space
The restaurant space at Kiez Vegan is made up of an indoor and outdoor space. There are about 5 to 6 tables inside and 4 outside. It can get pretty packed up on weekend evenings, but I’ve never not been able to get a table.
If you can, you should try to sit outside because the inside space smells of fried food, which leaves your clothes smelling of it afterwards. However, if they have opened up the windows and doors of the main indoor space then this is less of an issue!
The space itself is quite informal, so it is great for a casual meet up with friends.
