At risk of sounding like a hipster, I can’t survive without my oat flat whites. Thankfully, Mexico City has satisfied my hipster needs, particularly in the trendier zones, like Condesa and Roma.
It is becoming a lot more common to find a whole plethora of plant-based milks in most coffee shops, including my favourite oat milk, Oatly. It is by far the most superior plant-based barista milk!
Having spent the last 5 months drinking all the oat flat whites I possibly could, which, tbh wasn’t too hard a job, I’ve now put together this ultimate guide to all my favourites.
Did I miss any great spots? Let me know in the comments below!
Compay
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Condesa & Roma Norte
My ultimate favourite oat flat white comes from Compay. Not only is it wonderfully creamy and well-balanced, but they don’t charge extra for the oat milk – making it also one of the cheapest oat flat whites in the city!
They have two spots, one in Condesa, which is a small hole-in-the-wall style coffee shop with outdoor seating (where I love to sit and watch the world go by) and the other in Roma Norte, which is more of a coffee stand/stall.
INSOMNIA CAFE
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Roma Norte
INSOMNIA CAFÉ is a quirky coffee shop in Roma Norte. Their oat flat whites are also really well balanced, with the perfect creaminess in the foam. I particularly enjoy the glass that they serve it in.
They have both indoor and outdoor seating for you to enjoy your coffee. The seating indoors in limited, but I think you could get away with working in there also.
Quiasmo Coffee Bar
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Condesa
Quiasmo Coffee Bar is my favourite spot to work in because the space feels open and relaxing, with plenty of seats that wrap around the walls, allowing for some privacy and easy access to plug sockets.
It also helps that they make a really tasty oat flat white. They are consistently good and always creamy and strong.
BUNA
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Condesa, Roma Norte, & Doctores
BUNA is a small chain coffee shop with three locations in the city, including a roastery in Doctores. The coffee has great flavour, and they get a decent foam on the oat milk.
Their location in Condesa is a popular remote work spot, so you may struggle to get a table on the weekdays, but you can get an oat flat white to-go to enjoy in the park right next door.
Hule
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Condesa
Another very popular spot in Hule, but typically, you’ll find mostly tourists or locals here hanging out and listening to music. It is a food spot/bar/coffee shop with loads of vinyl to listen to and purchase. The oat flat whites are also great and quite strong!
It can be hard to get a table at peak hours, but they have some seating to perch on if you are only sticking around for a quick coffee.
Grieta
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Roma Norte
If you prefer your coffee in a mug (I’m sure there must be some), then head to Grieta for their delicious flat with oat milk. It is perfectly balanced, but maybe just a tiny little bit on the big side for an authentic flat white.
Grieta is a tiny coffee shop hidden down a side street, with friendly staff and comfortable seating. It is a great place to go read a book or draw for a few hours.
Sede Cafe
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Roma Norte, Condesa, Juárez, Del Valle, Insurgentes Sur, Centro & Santa Fe
Sede Café is a chain coffee shop in the city, covering a fair few locations outside of Roma and Condesa. So if you find yourself craving an oat flat white and you are elsewhere in the city, look out for Sede Café! Most of them are quite small, hole-in-the-wall shops with some outdoor seating.
I was served mine in a takeaway cup, which I think takes away from the taste. But still, it was a satisfying brew. Looking at their photos, I believe they only do takeaway cups.
MOMO Coffee
- Oat milk: Oatly and other oat milk
- Location: Roma Norte, Col del Valle, Narvarte Oriente & Juárez
MOMO Coffee is another small coffee shop chain with a few establishments south of Roma Sur, in Col del Valle and Narvarte Oriente. I enjoy these neighbourhoods, they are chilled out with fewer tourists. Plus, you can find some great vegan food there. Plus, it is good to know you can get an oat flat white when in those areas also!
They have a choice of oat milk, including Oatly. I found the coffee to be well balanced, and the creaminess was near spot on. And bonus points for the latte art on top!
Quentin Cafe
- Oat milk: Unsure
- Location: Condesa, Roma Norte, Roma Sur, and Juárez
Quentin Cafe is a very popular small chain of coffee shops, with establishments in most of the main touristy areas. It is often very busy, but I always find somewhere to perch for a quick coffee.
The oat flat whites are tasty, but I don’t think the foam or creaminess is quite there. I actually don’t know what oat milk they use, but potentially, it isn’t Oatly! That being said, it is still an enjoyable coffee with great flavours!
Brewers Cafeteria Experimental
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Roma Sur
Located at the bottom of Roma Sur is Brewers Cafeteria Experimental, a cute little coffee shop with both indoor and outdoor seating. The oat flat whites are well balanced with great strength and flavour, but sometimes I find the foam not as creamy despite using Oatly, and they are a little on the large side.
The staff are very friendly, and the space always feels inviting. I sometimes like to work there if it isn’t too busy!
CUMBE Coffee Roasters
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Roma Norte
CUMBÉ is another popular touristy coffee shop. It is very aesthetically pleasing with loads of stickers and posters on the walls outside, so I thoroughly enjoy sitting there just staring at the walls (not weird at all haha).
Whilst I think their oat flat white is a little on the big side and I didn’t enjoy the mug (I much prefer a glass), the coffee itself had great flavour.
Totte Para Todos
- Oat milk: Unsure
- Location: Anzures
If you are staying in the Anzures area, which is where I stayed when I first came to Mexico City, then you need to check out Totte Para Todos. It is one of my favourite coffee shops aesthetically, with lots of plants and cute outdoor seating.
I asked if they had oat milk, and he said they did today, so I can’t say for certain it will always be available. It was enjoyable, and the coffee tasted great, but it lacked creaminess (probably because they didn’t use something like Oatly).
Sonambulo Cafe
- Oat milk: Oatly
- Location: Condesa
When it comes to cute outdoor cafe vibes, Sonāmbulo Café is smashing it. It is a beautiful spot to sit and people-watch or read a book as the world passes by. I also love the cup they serve their oat flat white in – it’s the small things!
The coffee was enjoyable and well-balanced, but the foam wasn’t creamy enough and was a little too bubbly. The staff could have been having an off day so I’ll definitely give them another go soon!
