Austria is a beautiful country, home to one of my favourite European capital cities, Vienna. I went during the festive season, and between navigating the Christmas markets, tracking down the best Glühwein, discovering that the deep-fried Langos bread (a Hungarian bread popular at markets) can be vegan-friendly, and squeezing in a visit to Schönbrunn Palace, I barely had a moment to stop.
With so much to pack in, the last thing I wanted to be worrying about was my phone’s internet connection. Without it, I would struggle to navigate my way around, stay in contact with fellow travellers, and catch up on emails. That is why I always travel with a Saily eSIM. Austria was no exception!
In this article, I am going to go into detail about why I recommend Saily’s eSIM for Austria (or their regional Europe plan if you are planning to country hop, as I did between Czechia, Austria, and Hungary), including my experience with reliability, internet speeds, security features and pricing.

How to pick the best eSIM for Austria?
There are tonnes of eSIM brands out there, and I understand just how difficult it can be to choose one for your trip! When testing out different eSIM providers in Austria (and beyond), here is what I was looking for:
- Price: Data costs add up, especially when crossing borders. I look for transparent pricing with no hidden fees, and ideally a regional plan if I am hopping between countries.
- Reliability: I look for a provider that partners with major local networks like A1, Magenta, and Drei, which offer the most extensive 4G and 5G coverage across Austria, from the cities to the alpine regions.
- Flexibility: My travel plans often change. I want to be able to top up data in seconds through an app, rather than hunting down a SIM card shop in an unfamiliar city.
- Security: Public WiFi in busy spots like Vienna’s Naschmarkt or a packed Christmas market can be a real risk. I prefer my own private connection.
- Tip: If I ever do use a hotspot, I pair it with NordVPN (read my NordVPN review here).

Why I recommend Saily Austria eSIM
There is so much that I love about Saily’s eSIM for Austria, and to be honest, Saily in general. Their Austria eSIM offers reliable coverage, affordable prices, great speeds, and additional security features, which set it apart from other eSIM providers.

Pros
- Great coverage across top destinations in Austria
- Reliable access to 4G, LTE, and 5G networks
- Affordable plans with a variety of lengths and data
- Built-in ad blocker that saves data
- Additional security features like web protection
Cons
- Data-only (no Austrian phone number)
- Coverage may be weaker in remote alpine areas

How reliable was the coverage?
I had zero problems staying connected to the internet whilst using my Saily eSIM in Austria. Whether I was navigating between Christmas markets in Vienna, making my way to Schönbrunn Palace, or sitting on the train between Prague and Vienna and then onwards to Budapest, my Saily eSIM felt seamless throughout. I never noticed it drop out!
The train journeys (when travelling within the country and leaving for my next destination) in particular were a pleasant surprise. Train journeys can be hit and miss with connectivity, but I was able to work comfortably for most of both journeys, which made the travel time feel far more productive.
How fast are the internet speeds?
Speeds in Vienna were more than enough for everything I needed day to day. I could make video calls, stream things on my phone, and navigate around the city without any frustration. It performed just like my physical SIM does at home – so I was able to browse the internet like normal!
Even in busier spots like the Christmas markets, where networks can get congested with crowds of people all doing the same thing, I did not notice any real slowdown. For a city break, it handled everything I threw at it with ease.
Are there any additional benefits?
Saily offer a lot more than just an internet connection. They also have a variety of additional security features bolted on, which always give me peace of mind when travelling to new places!
The built-in web protection filters out malicious sites in the background, and the ad blocker saves around 28% of your data by stopping heavy adverts from loading, so your plan goes further without you having to do anything.
There is also a virtual location feature, which lets you browse as though you are connecting from a different country. Handy if you want to check prices back home or access content whilst you are away.

How much does it cost?
Saily offers some excellent value for Austria, with plans starting from just $3.99 for 1GB over 7 days, right up to unlimited at $48.99 for 15 days.
For a week in Vienna, most travellers will find a mid-tier plan more than sufficient, particularly with the ad blocker quietly stretching your data in the background.
For comparison, Holafly, one of the other well-known names in travel eSIMs, only offers unlimited plans for Austria. Their 7-day unlimited plan comes in at around $31.20, which is considerably more expensive for the average city break traveller who simply doesn’t need unlimited data.
| Data | Duration | Saily (USD) | Holafly (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB | 7 days | $3.99 | N/A (unlimited only) |
| 10GB | 30 days | $10.99 | N/A (unlimited only) |
| 20GB | 30 days | $15.99 | N/A (unlimited only) |
| Unlimited | 30 days | $71.99 | $74.90 |
Saily’s unlimited plan also comes out a few dollars cheaper than Holafly, should you be looking for a more hefty plan for your travels in Austria!

Who should buy Saily’s eSIM for Austria?
Anyone travelling to Austria will realistically benefit from having an eSIM. It is the simplest and most affordable way to stay connected, and with Saily’s eSIM for Austria, you get reliable coverage, great speeds, competitive pricing, and useful security features on top.
In short, I think anyone heading to Austria should pick one up before they travel. Including, but not limited to:
- Solo travellers and backpackers
- Digital nomads (who may need to work during their visit to Austria)
- Large families who may need to hotspot (share their data) to stay connected
- Country hoppers moving between Czechia, Austria, and Hungary who want one plan for all three (check out Saily’s regional plans or their Ultra subscription).

How to get started with Saily
Setting up your eSIM for Austria is a straightforward process that avoids the need for expensive data roaming and physical SIM shops. I have outlined the steps below to help you get connected with Saily before you even touch down in Vienna:
- Check your phone compatibility: Most newer iPhones and Android devices support eSIM technology, but it is always worth double-checking your specific model on the Saily website before you buy.
- Pick your plan: Saily offers flexible data options for Austria, ranging from 1GB for short trips to 20GB for longer stays, and even unlimited data options. You can browse the current Austria plans here to see which fits your itinerary.
- Install your eSIM: Once you have purchased your plan, you will receive clear, step-by-step instructions. Activation is incredibly fast, and I usually get mine set up whilst I am finishing my packing, so it is ready to go.
- Download the Saily app: This is available on both the App Store and Google Play and serves as your hub for managing your connection. You can monitor your usage here and even purchase your initial plan directly through the app if you prefer.
- Top up as needed: If you find yourself using more data than expected or decide to extend your trip, you can easily add more data within the app. The best part is that you do not need to download a new eSIM; you can simply add more data to your existing one.

My verdict: The best eSIM for Austria
No matter what reason you are visiting Austria, if you need a reliable internet connection, then you should consider an eSIM. And for me, I always use Saily. It is for me one of the most reliable eSIM providers I’ve used.
Not only do you get great speeds and connection throughout Austria, but you can also benefit from a hotspot (for other devices), additional security features (including an ad blocker), and competitive pricing.
It takes away the stress of hunting down a local SIM card shop on arrival or worrying about roaming charges from your home provider. Having that immediate, reliable connection meant I could focus on exploring the city, finding the best festive food, and actually enjoying myself rather than worrying about staying online.
