When flying long-haul, most airlines will typically offer a couple of complimentary in-flight meals, but these are never suitable for vegan diets. Therefore, you must request a vegan meal in advance with the airline.

This is a great advancement from the days when airlines didn’t offer a vegan meal choice at all. I used to have to bring a lot of food onto the plane with me. Otherwise, I’d be eating a bag of nuts, washed down with a cup of orange juice.

Thankfully, times are changing! In this guide, I will go into detail about whether or not KLM offers vegan meals, how to request them, and my experience with the food during a recent long-haul flight.

Disclaimer: I flew Premium Comfort on KLM when taking photos of their vegan meals. So they will look somewhat different if you are flying either economy or business class. But no matter what class you fly on, you can request a vegan meal on KLM.

Does KLM offer vegan meals?

Yes, I am happy to say that KLM does offer vegan meals. They are labelled as a ‘Vegetarian vegan meal’ on their online booking portal. Having recently flown with KLM and ordered their vegan meal option, I can also confirm that both courses were completely vegan and well-labelled, with the universal code: VGML.

How do you request a vegan meal with KLM?

I find the process of requesting a vegan meal with KLM to be quick and simple.

When booking your flight on the KLM website, you will see the option to select a meal before purchasing your ticket. This takes you to a menu of special meals, with ‘Vegetarian vegan meal’ at the bottom.

You can also access this page after booking your tickets, whether you have bought them through the KLM website or an external provider. You just need your booking reference and last name, head to the ‘My Trip‘ page and select ‘Log in with booking details’. Here you will see your booking details, including a link to add a meal to your booking.

I have requested vegan meals on a fair few airlines now, and this is by far the easiest process I have seen yet.

How are the vegan meals on KLM?

Requesting the vegan meals on KLM was simple, nearly as simple as the vegan meals I was given on my flight, haha. I can’t complain, because at least I had something edible, but it left a lot to be desired.

I was flying from Mexico City to Amsterdam, and to give KLM some credit, I always end up with boring food when flying out of Mexico, no matter the airline.

The main course included plain rice with vegetables, mushrooms, and tomato sauce; a side salad without dressing; dry crackers; and grapes.

For breakfast, I had a bowl of fruit and, weirdly, a small bowl of mushy peas. The peas were well seasoned, but a little strange. Moreover, I was given a pot of jam but no bread. Just more of the same crackers, which I had already used to eat my bowl of mushy peas.

Both meals came on fancy trays, because I was flying Premium Comfort. But it felt like an economy meal, just in nicer tubs.

I felt pretty full after the dinner, but the breakfast left me feeling quite hungry. Some bread and maybe some legumes and vegetables would have been much appreciated, alongside my peas, haha.
