There’s little more disappointing than missing an episode of your favourite TV programme while abroad, only to encounter spoilers in your group chat. Due to licensing restrictions, watching UK TV when abroad can be a challenge, unless international streaming services have acquired the rights. This is where a Virtual Private Network (VPN) becomes invaluable.

For years, I’ve relied on a VPN to ensure I can access all my favourite TV programmes while travelling. It allows me to use services like iPlayer and Channel 4, and even change my location to access different titles on Netflix. Beyond entertainment, a VPN also offers protection from potential threats when using public internet networks.

Let me guide you through the process of watching UK TV abroad, safely and effortlessly.

1. Pack a compatible device

If you want to watch UK TV abroad, you will likely need to bring your own watching devices with you, plus a cable if your apartment or hotel has a TV that it can connect to. I always travel with my laptop, since I work remotely, but you may not want to carry something quite so heavy. Therefore, you can also use a tablet or a mobile phone.

To be extra prepared, you may want to download your preferred streaming platforms onto your device if you haven’t already. Next, you will want to install a VPN onto your device.

2. Install a VPN

In order to watch UK TV abroad I use a reliable VPN which is installed on my laptop and my phone. ExpressVPN is my top choice, mostly for its ease of use, fast connection speeds, and robust security features. Here’s how to get started installing a VPN on to your devices:

  • Step 1: Sign Up for ExpressVPN First, visit the ExpressVPN website and choose a subscription plan that suits your needs. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free.
  • Step 2: After signing up, you’ll be directed to download the ExpressVPN app for your device. Whether you’re using a Windows PC, Mac, Android, or iOS device, the website provides easy-to-follow guides for each platform. For Windows users, simply navigate to the ExpressVPN website, select the Windows version, and click ‘Download now’.

On top of downloading the apps to all my devices, I have also added ExpressVPN to my Chrome browser. I find this really useful for when I want to quickly switch my location whilst browsing.

Why VPN do I use?

I use ExpressVPN on all my travels and it gives me the freedom to watch UK TV everywhere I go, including watching Killing Eve in Vietnam and Top Boy in Mexico.

3. Connect to a UK server

Once you have installed your VPN on to your devices you will need to open it up and select a server location. ExpressVPN offers a few different server locations across the UK, you can pick any of these.

If you also enjoy watching programmes from other countries, then you can select from over a hundred different locations. For example, if you enjoy watching niche Japanese anime or an American TV show, you may benefit from a VPN.

4. Stream your favourite TV

Now use your device to load up and play your desired TV programme. If you would like to attach it to the TV, then you will either need to cast it (on compatible devices) or connect via a HDMI cable.

Happy watching!
