The best vegan food in Berlin

By

Last updated: September 23, 2024

Berlin is a treasure trove of vegan food. You could be enjoying delicate Italian pastries with a creamy oat flat white in the morning and tucking into a schnitzel by dinner. With so much vegan food in Berlin I have put together this list of my favourite 100% vegan cafes, bakeries and restaurants.

One of the very many reasons I regularly return to Berlin is for the vegan food. It is a relatively small and easy city to get around and there are vegan restaurants around almost every corner. According to Happy Cow, there are 100+ fully vegan establishments in Berlin, and over 100 vegetarian restaurants. Even if there isn’t a fully vegan restaurant nearby, you will find vegan options at most cafes and restaurants.

There is also a huge variety of vegan food to enjoy, including delicious vegan burgers, traditional German food, Italian pastries, doughnuts, ice cream, and plenty of Asian food (think Vietnamese, Japanese, and Thai). There is even a fully vegan supermarket. Having visited Berlin many times over the past few years I have compiled my ultimate list of vegan food spots in Berlin, the very places I return to time and time again. I hope you enjoy the vegan food in Berlin as much as I do!

My top vegan food picks in Berlin

A vegan chicken schnitzel at Forsters in Berlin

Försters

While Berlin offers many cuisines for you to tuck into it would be a shame not to try some local German cuisine too. Thankfully, you can do that at Försters, a fully vegan German restaurant. They offer a variety of German and Austrian dishes like a vegan chicken schnitzel (pictured above) served with a potato salad and vegan roast beef. Each dish comes with a wine recommendation which I have found to work perfectly together!

The restaurant itself is located in the chic Prenzlauer Berg area and in the warmer months it is really lovely to sit outside and watch the world go by!

A vegan chocolate pastry on a metal dish next to an oat flat white at The Sanctuary Berlin, a vegan pastry shop

The Sanctuary Berlin

  • Type: Pastry shop
  • Location: Mitte

The Sanctuary Berlin is one of my favourite discoveries to date. It is a vegan Italian pastry shop that sells the most delicious sweet treats and savoury lunch items like focaccia and pizza slices. Everything I have tried here has been incredible. Expect flaky pastry and deep rich flavours. The coffee is great too! The one pastry I can’t get enough of is their chocolate cannoncino (pictured above) – a puff pastry cone filled with a creamy chocolate mousse.

The food here is so good that it does get very busy. I recommend visiting on a weekday morning because weekends are especially busy. But you can also order their pastries to your apartment or hotel via Uber Eats.

A vietnamese vegan banh xeo with a glass of wine on an outdoor table at Chay Long, some of the best vegan Vietnamese food in Berlin

Chay Long

One thing Berlin isn’t short of is vegan Vietnamese restaurants. I’ve been to a fair few of the best ones, including 1990 Vegan Living, Soy, and Cat Tuong, but my absolute favourite is Chay Long. The food is some of the most authentic I have tried in Berlin and their bánh xèo (pictured above) is huge. I just about finished one to myself and I was in heaven. You can also enjoy other classic dishes like phở, bún bò Huế, and bánh giò, a pyramid-shaped rice dumpling stuff with minced meat and mushroom.

The interior of the restaurant reminds me of many of the Buddhist chay restaurants in Vietnam which was comforting and nostalgic for me since I spend a lot of my time in Vietnam! They also have a great outdoor seating area which is great in the warmer months. They also have another location in Hasenheide which I haven’t visited!

A vegan burger inside a paper wrapper on a tin with VEG'D branded paper underneath at VEG'D a vegan burger spot in Berlin

VEG’D

I’ve tried a lot of vegan burgers in Berlin and the burgers at VEG’D are by far my favourite. Which is handy since they have multiple venues dotted throughout Berlin. The buns are substantial and the fillings are fresh and packed full of flavour. I particularly enjoy their spicy chicken burger but I am partial to a smash burger (pictured above) now and then. Their chips are also wonderfully crispy.

I have found all of the staff to be super friendly and chatty at all VEG’D locations I’ve visited plus the venues themselves have a good atmosphere. There are many other vegan burger spots you can try, like Vincent Vegan and Vedang, but I was upset to find the latter advertising themselves as being vegan despite selling animal products for your ‘meat-eating friends’.

A vegan doner kebab with a bottle of wine behind on an outdoor table at Vamos Veganas a vegan restaurant in Berlin

Vamos Veganos

Eating a kebab while in Berlin is an absolute must-do. There are so many options and plenty of fully vegan kebab shops, but my favourite is from Vamos Veganas. The bread is wonderfully crispy and the sauce is delicious. The thinly sliced strips of fake meat are amazingly meaty and chewy and are well complemented by the thinly sliced veg. Vamos Veganos also sometimes sell vegan pizza but I am unsure how regular this is.

They have indoor seating but the majority of their seating is outdoors. Beware, you may get a little messy when eating a kebab, so if you are a self-conscious eater then tuck yourself in a corner somewhere! You can also find some pretty tasty vegan kebabs at The Vegan Gyros (open on Sundays) in Mauerpark or Vöner in Friedrichshain.

A close up of a coffee and a vegan doughnut at Brammibal's Donuts a vegan doughnut shop in Berlin

Brammibal’s Donuts

Brammibal’s Donuts is something of an institution in Berlin and is loved by vegans and non-vegans alike. They sell a variety of tasty vegan doughnuts and sometimes also offer savoury specials like breakfast muffins. I also make sure to visit Brammibal’s Donuts at least once (although I often end up going a lot more) every time I am in Berlin. I am a doughnut fiend so this place is heaven to me.

Either fortunately or unfortunately (for my weight), Brammibal’s Donuts have multiple locations dotted around Berlin. Some are suitable for working in, like Neukölln and Potsdamer Platz, but some are quite small and more suitable for takeout or for a quick bite to eat with friends.

A table with two coffees and two vegan bagels for breakfast at Plant Base a vegan cafe in berlin

Plant Base

Plant Base is my favourite brunch spot. They offer a variety of cakes, smoothies, and coffee. They also have a selection of savoury dishes like a vegan salmon bagel, tofu scramble, and a typically German brunch dish with dips, vegetables, fruits and granola. If you enjoy their cakes then you can order a full one to enjoy in your apartment or hotel!

It is a light and airy space that is great to hang out in plus the cafe turns into an event space in the evening, so make sure to check out their events calendar for things to get involved in during your time in Berlin!

A bowl of vegan Khao Soi with a singha beer in the background at li.ke a vegan Thai restaurant in Berlin

li.ke

There are nowhere near as many vegan Thai restaurants as there are Vietnamese in Berlin but with vegan Thai food this good at li.ke, you don’t need anywhere else to go! They have a variety of authentic Thai dishes like my favourite dish, khao soi (pictured above). You can also get panang curry and pad Thai. The majority of their alcoholic drinks are German but you will find a few Thai drinks mixed in.

It is a popular spot, particularly at the weekends, so, at times, you may need to wait a few minutes for a table to open up outside. Otherwise, they tend to have plenty of space inside!

Two vegan pizzas served at La Stella Nera a vegan pizza restaurant in Berlin

La Stella Nera

Whenever I have a craving for pizza in Berlin I head to La Stella Nera. They make wood-fired vegan pizzas with a variety of inventive toppings. They have a mixture of pizza rossa and pizza bianca options, including patate e cipolle (a white pizza with potato) and diavola (a spicy tomato pizza with vegan meats). The pizza crust is delicious and crispy with an authentic Italian taste and the vegan cheese is subtle.

La Stella Nera is situated in the south of Berlin in the Neukölln area. The majority of vegan places are around Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, typically in the areas where most people stay, but it is worth heading down here just for this pizza.

A close up of a vegan tan tan ramen at IIMORI vegan in Berlin

IIMORI VEGAN

  • Type: Vegan ramen
  • Location: Mitte

Iimori Vegan is a vegan ramen restaurant serving three different ramen soups and three dry ramen dishes. I really enjoy both the tonkotsu and the tantan ramen. They are packed full of flavour and the vegan meat complements them well. You can substitute the vegan meat with gyoza if you prefer. The gyoza are also really tasty and make for a great side dish.

Iimori Vegan Ramen is completely vegan but it is owned by the restaurant next door, Iimori Ramen, which isn’t vegan. However, it appears they keep the kitchens separate, so no cross-contamination.

A square vegan matcha and strawberry cake and ice latte at a table outside of Sakura a vegan cafe in Berlin

Sakura Plant-Based Café & Bakery

  • Type: Vegan bakery
  • Location: Mitte

Sakura is a plant-based bakery and cafe with a Japanese twist. They create the prettiest cakes and pastries that are as tasty as they look! Expect cakes like matcha and strawberry, chocolate with yuzu, and lemon thyme meringue. Many of their cakes can also be ordered whole. As well as cakes, they also sell a mixture of savoury dishes, like a BLT croissant, and hot drinks.

There is plenty of space to sit inside or out and it has a lovely atmosphere. I really enjoy bringing my book and sitting out front on the pavement with an iced latte and a cake.

A plate of salad and a vegan cheese toastie served at EasyPeasy a vegan cafe in Berlin

EasyPeasy

EasyPeasy is my favourite gluten-free vegan cafe. Their breaded products are made using gluten-free sourdough which is honestly the best I’ve ever tried. They use it to make their vegan cheese toastie which I barely noticed was gluten-free! They also sell dishes like a vegan chickpea omelette as well as cakes and coffee. Most of the savoury dishes come with a healthy salad and a dressing of choice, which was really refreshing.

There is plenty of seating space inside so even during busy periods you should be able to get yourself a table! It appears to be work-friendly but I am unsure if they are happy with people using their laptops, you may need to ask.

An ice cream cone with a scoop of vegan cinnamon bun ice cream on top with a Berlin street and tram in the background at Green Scoop Vegan

Green Scoop Vegan

There are a few spots to get a scoop of vegan ice cream in Berlin but my favourite place is Green Scoop Vegan. They have a fridge full of vegan ice cream flavours all made using cashew milk, plus a few fruity sorbet options. I am in love with their peanut butter ice cream but if they have their cinnamon roll ice cream then you must try it. It comes with bits of cinnamon roll inside and it is delicious.

It is great to be able to order an ice cream inside a cone, knowing that it is completely vegan. They have a few seats outside but it can get a little busy at times so you may want to take your ice cream to go. Thankfully, it is nice to wander around the streets of Friedrichshain.

A fridge full of vegan food at Rewe vegan shop

REWE voll pflanzlich

There has long been a vegan supermarket in Berlin. It used to be Veganz, but they sold their shop to REWE (a supermarket chain) so that they could focus on the manufacturing side of their business. Thankfully, REWE kept the shop as a fully vegan outlet so you can shop here in complete comfort. It is quite large and has a good variety of products to try, including fresh food, vegan cheese, vegan meats, chocolate, and dry foods.

If you aren’t close to the vegan REWE then fear not, most of their shops have a large selection of vegan products, even in their smaller stores! Sometimes I have found their vegan fridges to be larger than their animal counterparts!
