I am such a coffee fiend that the last thing I think about before going to sleep at night is the cup of coffee I’ll enjoy in bed the next morning. And no, instant coffee will not suffice! I am both a coffee addict and a coffee snob.

But when travelling, it is even harder to guarantee that I’ll get my hands on a great cup of coffee. Which is why I have been thoroughly enjoying using my OutIn Nano Espresso Maker – but it isn’t without its drawbacks. Most of all, I wanted it to charge faster and brew more espressos between charges. Making it even more convenient for travel.

Thankfully, OutIn have been perfecting the portable espresso maker, and they are now in the process of launching their updated machine, the OutIn Mino.

OutIn asked me to review their new espresso maker, Mino, alongside their full portable coffee setup. This includes their portable espresso maker (Mino), their portable coffee grinder (Fino), their coffee stand, and their coffee scales (Claro).

In this in-depth OutIn review, I will discuss my experience with their full portable coffee setup, providing summaries of each product.

TL;DR

OutIn’s portable coffee setup lets me make genuinely good espresso wherever I am. The Mino is the perfect improvement on the Nano, with faster charging and more brews per charge, and paired with the Fino grinder and Claro scales, it makes a proper bean-to-cup setup. It is ideal for solo travel and anyone who refuses to compromise on coffee quality.

Pros

  • Everything is easy to set up and use
  • The whole coffee setup is easy to carry around
  • Create tasty espressos on the go (and at home!)
  • Made from high-quality and durable materials
  • Eco-friendly packaging

Cons

  • Not so easy to make large coffees

What is OutIn?

OutIn is a portable coffee maker brand – combining their love for coffee and the outdoors. They specialise in making portable equipment that allows you to brew the perfect cup of coffee on the go, from start to finish.

This means they sell everything from portable coffee scales and grinders to a portable espresso maker that can heat water absolutely anywhere.

My experience with OutIn

I have been using the full portable OutIn coffee setup, from bean to cup. This has included weighing out my beans on the Claro scales, grinding my coffee beans in the Fino portable coffee grinder, and brewing my coffee in the Mino espresso maker using their coffee stand.

Once I set up and used each piece of equipment, I felt comfortable with the whole process, and it all ran pretty seamlessly! Brewing me an espresso in under 5 minutes.

Overall, the full setup creates a delicious espresso and can be easily packed up and carried around in a small bag or rucksack. However, the coffee stand will need to be disassembled with an allen key if you want to make it more portable.

I will now walk through a more detailed experience using each piece of OutIn portable coffee equipment!

OutIn Mino Espresso Machine

As I mentioned in the introduction, I was previously using OutIn’s Nano espresso machine to make coffees on the go. I took it camping, to festivals, and for random days out.

It is a great machine – as you’ll see in my OutIn Nano review. But I found the charging slightly slow. And when you can only brew 5 espressos (from cold water) per charge, as is industry standard right now*, you have to charge it a fair amount to get regular use out of it.

OutIn have been improving the technology and has recently brought out their new Espresso Maker, the OutIn Mino. It is an updated version of the Nano, with full charging in under 90 minutes and 6 espressos from cold water per full charge. It will take around 149 seconds to heat the water, which is an improvement of 51 seconds! If you are using pre-boiled water, the Mino can brew around 500 espressos, whilst the Nano could do around 200.

Here is a list of the features of the OutIn Mino Espresso Maker:

  • 6 espressos per charge (over 500 brews when using pre-boiled water).
  • Achieve full charge in 90 minutes, get from 20% to 80% in just 45 minutes.
  • Uses USB-C fast charging
  • Heats water from cold in 149 seconds

It is an absolute joy to use. Like the Nano, it is easy to carry around and use absolutely anywhere. You can prop it up anywhere whilst it brews; it doesn’t require any specialist equipment. Although you can use their coffee stand (mentioned below).

I always find the espressos to be consistently tasty with a rich crema on top. But I would recommend drinking it straight away, especially if you are somewhere cold!

*OutIn’s main competitor, Wacaco, has a portable espresso maker that can also brew just 5 espressos per charge.

The OutIn Fino coffee grinder machine with freshly ground coffee in the base

OutIn Fino Coffee Grinder

The OutIn Fino Coffee Grinder is my new favourite piece of coffee gear. I’ve always preferred the taste of a coffee that has been made using freshly ground coffee beans, but that is tough whilst on the move.

This grinder is portable and takes up about the same amount of space as the Mino portable espresso maker. It also comes with a handy carry bag, so you can place it into your rucksack or bag.

It may be relatively small and portable, but it is powerful and effective. It is quick at grinding, and the results are consistent. Plus, it surprised me how discreet it is; it makes noise, but it isn’t particularly loud!

The beans go in at the top and sit inside the machine, and the freshly ground coffee comes out of the bottom into the detachable pot. This pot has a lid, which means you can store your ground coffee for later.

Here are some of the features of the Fino portable coffee grinder:

  • It comes with 28 grind levels, with micro-adjustment, allowing for specific grinds to suit personal preferences.
  • The machine weighs around 690g.
  • A 38mm, 7-core conical burr made from 420 stainless steel, with a hardness rating of HRC 56-60.

OutIn Coffee Stand

Whilst I wouldn’t say that the OutIn coffee stand is an essential part of the setup, it does make the whole brewing process a bit more enjoyable. It gives you a stable place to rest the Mino while it brews, which is particularly useful when you are camping or using it on uneven surfaces.

The stand is made from sturdy metal and feels well-built, like the rest of OutIn’s gear. Once assembled, it holds the espresso maker securely and allows you to place your cup directly underneath. This makes the brewing process more hands-free, which I appreciated when I was making coffee in the morning and did not want to juggle too many things at once.

You can adjust the height of the stand and use it for a variety of different coffee setups, including the OutIn Nano or Mino espresso maker, or your favourite pour-over coffee maker.

That said, the coffee stand is the least portable part of the setup, as you will need an Allen key to disassemble it fully. If you are travelling very light, you might want to check out OutIn’s foldable coffee stand instead.

OutIn Claro Coffee Scale

The OutIn Claro coffee scale is small, simple, and does exactly what it needs to do. I used it mainly at the start of the process to weigh out my coffee beans before grinding, but it also works well for weighing your shot if you want to be a bit more precise with your brewing – the included silicone mat means you can put hot things on it!

It is compact and lightweight, with its own carry case, which makes it easy to slip into the bag with the rest of the setup. Despite its size, it feels solid and well-made, and it did not slide around when I was using it on different surfaces.

The display is clear and easy to read, even outdoors, and the buttons are straightforward. There is no steep learning curve here, which I appreciated when making coffee first thing in the morning or when travelling and trying to keep things simple.

OutIn review verdict

As someone who cares a lot about coffee quality, even when travelling, the full OutIn portable coffee setup has genuinely impressed me. From grinding fresh beans to pulling a proper espresso, it allows me to keep my usual coffee routine intact when I am away from home.

The standout piece for me is the OutIn Mino espresso maker. It fixes the main frustrations I had with the Nano, particularly charging speed and the number of brews per charge, while still being just as easy to use and travel with. Paired with the Fino grinder and Claro scales, it becomes a complete bean-to-cup setup that does not feel like a compromise.

That said, this is not the setup for making large coffees or brewing for multiple people in one go. It works best for solo/duo travel, slow mornings, and situations where quality matters more than volume. If you are happy taking a few extra minutes to make a great espresso wherever you are, then OutIn’s gear does exactly what it promises.

For me, it has become my go-to coffee setup for camping trips, festivals, and weekends away, and I can now say with confidence that travelling no longer means settling for bad coffee.
