Tours can truly make or break a holiday. I’ve had some incredible experiences discovering new places, learning new things and meeting awesome people. But I’ve also wasted hours with uninterested and unhelpful tour guides, particularly when booking something in person. Which is why I love using tour reseller sites with reviews, like GetYourGuide.

Having now used two major tour resellers, GetYourGuide and Viator, I can write this thorough and honest GetYourGuide review. I will draw upon my experience with both platforms, so you can find out where to book your next tour!

Pros

  • The platform is easy to use
  • Free 24-hour cancellation
  • Great variety of experiences worldwide

Cons

  • More expensive than booking direct
  • The quality of tours differs

My experience

During my travels in Mexico, I decided to book a vegan street food tour in Mexico City. I have spent a lot of time eating through all the vegan food in CDMX, but the tour offered an opportunity to eat local street food that I hadn’t tried before, including huitlacoche (a fungus that grows on corn).

I booked my tour through GetYourGuide and I will now share my experience using the platform, the variety of experiences I had to choose from, the price, and the quality of the experiences themselves. To make this a thorough GetYourGuide review, I will compare it to my experience using Viator.

Ease of use

Using the GetYourGuide platform is super simple. You can either browse based on location or style of experience, including cultural, food, nature, and sports. You can also use their search bar to locate something more specific. For example, I always search ‘Vegan + place name’ to find tours that would be suited to me.

The platform also allows you to search for any time and availability or you can be more specific. And once you choose your experience you select the amount of people and time you are booking for. The site will search for availability and will provide you with any options. Then you can reserve your space. As soon as it is reserved you will get an email with all the necessary details.

It really is as simple as that! Moreover, I find it works in a very similar way to Viator and other tour reseller platforms, so if you have used any before then you will probably already understand how it works.

Variety of experiences

GetYourGuide has a huge variety of experiences on offer, although many of which are very similar. But that does mean you have choice when it comes to choosing the right tour for you. For example, you will find 1000s of experiences in Vietnam, but many of them are Cu Chi Tunnels or Halong Bay cruises.

I often find at least one or two tours that cater for vegan diets in most popular destinations. Moreover, there are always a few experiences that are quite unique as well as some really practical things, like bus pick ups.

That being said, I have overall found there to be more variety of experiences offered on Viator. Particularly when it comes to vegan food tours.

Price

Obviously, when booking through a third-party reseller you may end up spending a little more than you would if booking directly with the tour operator. That being said, the price difference is never a huge amount and is fair considering how the platform is able to connect you with tour operators that you may not otherwise have discovered!

For example, my vegan street food tour in Mexico City cost around $5 more when booking through GetYourGuide than if I booked directly with the tour operator.

I would however recommend booking directly with tour operators where possible as they may still get charged extra by reseller platforms and so won’t necessarily see all of the money you pay.

When comparing the prices of GetYourGuide to that on Viator, they are pretty similar. Sometimes they differ depending on the tour you book, which is why it can pay to shop around!

Quality of experiences

This is a very subjective section to write and also since GetYourGuide is a reseller, it will differ between each tour. But having read many GetYourGuide reviews online, I’ve seen many people complain about subpar experiences and hosts that weren’t so great.

When using Viator, I’ve often found the customer service to be really helpful and they tend to stand behind their tours and put more pride into their offering. But GetYourGuide customer service is said to be less helpful. However, I haven’t had to test that out, since I thoroughly enjoyed the tour I went on.

The guide was knowledgeable and professional. The tour itself felt well organised and ran seamlessly. Although, I was very careful to pick which tour I went on, basing it on the online reviews and other reviews I found when Googling them online.

GetYourGuide review verdict

I will certainly be using GetYourGuide again, particularly in any situations where there is an interesting looking tour that I can’t find on Viator, or that is cheaper on GetYourGuide.

Using the platform is an absolute breeze and I found the communication to be quick and informative. Within minutes I had a confirmation email with all the information I needed about my tour. The tour guide got in touch straight away with further confirmation and showing up on the day was really easy with the provided email.

I am certain there are probably bad tours being promoted on GetYourGuide and that is pretty much out of their control, but I am concerned about reviews I read online of other people’s bad experiences with their customer service. Which is one of the reasons I will continue using Viator as my first choice, with GetYourGuide coming in a close second behind.

I booked an excursion with Getyourguide for May 25th back in March and have yet to receive any confirmation and am unable to find a valid phone number to reach them. Found an email via Google but have had no response. In your research, did you find anything?

Hi Michelle, sorry to read that! I have found these numbers, but I am not sure if they are correct – https://getyourguide.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html

We used Get Your Guide for a Vatican/Sistine Chapel tour in May 2025 and it was probably the worst tour we’ve ever had. Guide was late, meeting location was sketchy, tour was incredibly boring with little info of interest provided. We finally took out r earpiece and listening to other tour guides. It seems Get Your Guide farms out to various independent guides (ours was Know My City) so probably luck of the draw. However, we will not use GYG again! Used Viator (run by Crown Tours) for our Colosseum/Forum tour and they were amazing! Organized, responsive, on time, great info shared.

‘Get your guide’ uses artificial intelligence to read customers emails and respond to them.. and it cost me $650AUD.

I enquired about the terms and conditions of cancelling my booking, and clearly stated in my email that it ‘was just a query and not a request to cancel’.

I received an automatic response saying my ‘booking had been cancelled as requested.’ and therefore I’m not entitled to a refund.

I can only reach them through email and 99% of the time I get a vague response that’s obviously from a robot.

That was three weeks ago and two real people/employees have emailed me admitting that ‘get your guide AI was at fault’.. but they are still refusing to refund me the $650.

Get Your Guide are not only lazy and unprofessional, they would rather gaslight clients than admit fault.

I’m going to pursue all my legal rights to get justice. But please everyone, avoid this company, ‘Get Your Guide or GYG’.

Do NOT use Get Your Guide!!!! We booked an excursion through them for a trip abroad. The day before the event I received emails to download their app for ALL information and tickets for my event – which I did. I kept getting reminders prior to the event and details of when to arrive. We too an expensive Uber to the event from our hotel, only to find out the event was canceled. The app kept telling me to board the boat etc. even still.

According to the provider, I was went an email from Trip Advisor stating my event was canceled hours prior. From Trip Advisor – in my email. I would NEVER have known to look for an email from another company regarding this trip. The company I PAID and who told me to download their app for info never informed me of any changes.

To top it all off, customer service told me I would be reimbursed for the Uber to and from the excursion. A week later I got a coupon for a % off my next trip with them. WHAT??? HORRIBLE customer service, follow up and their app is unreliable.

Thank you all SO very much for your candid and honest reviews. We have a huge European family cruise next summer and nobody wants the unnecessary drama or stress. I’ll go back to Viator.

Hi Shelley, I’d say Viator is certainly the safer option of the two! I hope you enjoy your cruise 🙂

Long-Term Customer Disappointment – Decision to Discontinue Using GetYourGuide transitioned to Viator.com

For more than 25 years, we have been loyal customers of GetYourGuide, booking hundreds of excursions across numerous destinations and spending tens of thousands of dollars in the process. We have consistently chosen your platform because of its convenience and selection of experiences.

Unfortunately, a recent experience has led us to conclude that GetYourGuide does not demonstrate meaningful loyalty or consideration toward long-term customers, even in situations completely beyond their control.

During a recent Norwegian Cruise Line voyage in Asia aboard the Norwegian Sun, our ship was unexpectedly unable to dock at Phu My Port Vietnam (serving Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon) for two consecutive days due to port authority restrictions on accommodating the vessel. This decision was announced by the ship’s captain at approximately 9:00 PM on Friday, January 23rd less than 24 hours before our scheduled excursion.

The affected booking was the **Saigon City & Cu Chi Tunnels Shore Excursion from Phu My Port** (reference: GYGWZA5347BV), priced at $280. This full-day tour was rendered impossible due to circumstances entirely outside our control.

Prior to this announcement, we had attempted multiple times, several days in advance to confirm pickup details with the local tour provider through your platform. We received no response, which was highly unusual based on our past experiences.

Despite the tour operator almost certainly being informed of the Norwegian Sun’s inability to dock (a fact the cruise line communicated publicly), neither the provider nor GetYourGuide reached out to us proactively to address the situation, offer alternatives, or initiate a cancellation/refund process even after the ship failed to arrive and multiple days had passed.

We subsequently contacted GetYourGuide customer service, providing clear documentation including an official letter from Norwegian Cruise Line confirming the port skip due to circumstances beyond our control. Regrettably, your team declined to issue any refund or make any accommodation, citing standard policy without apparent consideration of the exceptional nature of the situation.

We find this response deeply disappointing. GetYourGuide chose to stand firm on a $280 non-refund for a single excursion that we were physically prevented from attending despite our decades of loyalty, substantial spending, and the provision of supporting evidence rather than making a goodwill gesture that would have preserved a long-term customer relationship.

As a result, we have made the firm decision to permanently discontinue using GetYourGuide. We have already transitioned our family and close circle of friends to Viator.com, and we will now actively recommend Viator as our preferred platform for booking tours and excursions.

Through our well-established travel blog and social media channels which collectively reach millions of engaged followers we will share this experience openly and honestly. Our aim is to inform other travelers about the importance of choosing providers with more flexible policies and stronger customer consideration in cases of cruise itinerary changes, missed ports, or other unavoidable disruptions.

We sincerely regret that it has come to this after 25 years of positive engagement. A small act of goodwill in this instance could have retained decades of loyalty and future business. Instead, the decision to deny a refund under these exceptional circumstances has led to the loss of one long-term customer and, through our influence, potentially many more.

Should GetYourGuide wish to reconsider this matter or discuss ways to address it, we are open to communication. Otherwise, we will no longer be participating as customers.

Great honest review! I’ve used GetYourGuide a few times too, and while it’s convenient, I often feel a bit disconnected from the local community due to those high corporate commissions.

For your future trips in 2026, you might want to check out BEALOCAL.TRAVEL. It’s a 360° ecosystem that operates on a 0% commission model, meaning 100% of what you pay goes directly to the local guides or home restaurants. What I find really cool and perhaps safer for solo travelers is that you can choose your local host based on shared interests, age, and gender. It makes the whole experience feel much more like meeting a like-minded friend rather than just booking a generic tour. Thanks for sharing your experience!
